Setting Sustainability Goals for Your Construction Project

The green/ecology/environmental movement centers on the concept that we have certain limited, finite resources on this planet, and we cannot continue to deplete these resources at an accelerating and alarming rate. Otherwise, there will be little, or nothing, left for future generations. We can set sustainability goals for our construction project by focusing on different environmental areas. One precious resource increasingly in short supply is water, especially pure, uncontaminated water. There are various building techniques that can maximize the use of rain water runoff. Green building designs can help collect usable rainwater for gardens or other purposes. Crushed gravel is better than non-permeable concrete for allowing rain water to soak back into the ground. There are ultra-low flush toilets to help conserve water.

There are a variety of different green building materials that can be used in sustainable construction projects. Rammed earth, clay, recycled stone, adobe, organic straw, are all excellent green construction materials. You can sustainability goals in any building project by classifying and cataloging different environmental areas. For example, there is general energy conservation, health safety, lower costs, reduced maintenance, and overall design flexibility. Develop an overall sustainable design plan, and then start to fill in the details.
